I’m home for the holidays and am taking up crossword puzzles. Today’s mission: NYTimes Monday (read: the easiest) edition from Dec. 15. Serena’s time: 63:19. Help involved: 4 “Reveals” and countless Google searches to find some answers. Still, I was pretty pleased when I picked up the pattern. There were several clues about famous authors’ “favorite” foods – and the answers ended up being a food with their last name in it. So for instance, author “Jack” was “londonbroil” and author “Anne” was “ricepudding.” Smart Serena! Sort of, until I remember it took me over an hour to complete – with help - the Monday puzzle. Let’s see how I progress over the next 8 days.

The Times today gravely offended the great persimmon today (and me) in its description of my second favorite fruit: “Their mild, undistinctive flavor, vaguely reminscent of pumpkin…”
Mild?! UNDISTINCTIVE???? And, pumpkin? That comparison only works when you’re looking at color. Monsieur Author, you must have lost your taste buds in the other room. The persimmon is absolute deliciousness and has a sweet, rich, crisp flavor unlike any other fruit. (It actually tastes even better than I have made it out to be – my limited repetoire of adjectives limits my ability to describe it.)
Sigh. New York Times, I love you so but at times like these, I hang my head in shame.
i have maxed out on friends
Facebook tells me I have 562 friends, and lately, the “People You May Know Box” is only filled with people I don’t know. When I click on “See All” I do see a bunch of old classmates, who I don’t really care to connect with…so I’ve come to the conclusion that I only know 562 people. That means I’ve met about 21 people each year of my 26 years. Shoot. Now I’m starting to feel a little pathetic. Actually, I’ll tell you what’s pathetic. That I’m blogging about how many friends I purportedly have.
can’t stop gobbling
So it’s only noon, I haven’t even hit up my cousin’s place for Thanksgiving yet and I’m already relatively full. Dammit. I place full blame on this stuffing I’m supposed to make for dinner tonight. As prep, I had to cut 3 baguettes into little cubes. Somehow, half the little cubes ended up in my mouth and well, I stuffed stuffing in me and am stuffed with the stuff. Stuff.

If you know me, you know I love me some proper manners. I was getting on the 45 today, and even though this guy was obviously ahead of me to board the bus, he stepped aside to let me pass first. So nice! When I was in NY last week, another guy rushed over to help me carry my luggage up the subway steps even before I had reached them. Chivalry is not dead.
my monday night
I just watched 2 episodes of Gossip Girl and 1 episode of The Hills. As much as I love the shows, I officially feel stupid. I hope I regain some smart-cells as I sleep.

Ok so live blogging lasted a total of 10 minutes because I went out to watch the election results at Ryan’s workplace. Given my awesome timing, I was on the bus when all the networks called Obama but such are the travails of a Muni-dependent gal.
So we have Obama as our president (and Biden as our veep!). Yay! I admire O for energizing America and galvanizing millions to exercise their right to vote. He will be a tremendous leader, and I look forward to watching him inspire our people. I also look forward to O’s reception on the world’s stage – this will be an interesting, and (hopefully) favorable shuffle of feelings towards our nation. I must concede, however, that McCain had a well-articulated and thoughtful concession speech, and I really do feel bad for the guy.
When I look at the national front, the naysayer in me slowly starts to creep out. It’s slightly frightening that the Democrats have such a handle on the national government. 252 Dems vs 173 Repubs in the House. 56 Dems vs 41 Repubs in the Senate. Which would lead us to a Dem speaker of the house and majority leader. Dem as our president. Granted, this is the public’s way of expressing dissatisfaction with past leadership but I hope checks and balances work as they should.
The Republicans do need to play nice though. The current headline on Fox News? “As He Savors A Historic Victory, Obama Also Faces…A WORLD OF TROUBLE” (Last phrase in caps, font size a million.) “For President-Elect Obama, a Steep Climb Ahead.” I understand the need to play into your viewers’ dissatisfaction, but the network should learn to echo McCain’s gracious sentiment.

I get such shivers thinking about this (presumed) monumental outcome. Half of me wishes I had Obama-mania so the celebration would be that much sweeter, but it’s ok. I’m still satisfied over here.
I was just watching Charlie Gibson on ABC. He was going to interview a congressman but the mic wasn’t working, and the way he handled the situation live was just lovely. ABC’s news anchors are the best! First my love Peter, now Charlie.
