now playing
“Taylor” by Jack Johnson and “Easy Silence” by Dixie Chicks.
Until I kill them by overlistening…which will probably happen with another five plays.
thank goodness for shoulders
Last night, I went to see Social Distortion at The Fillmore – a fantastic punk rock band performing at a fantastic venue. While I realize my physical appearance as a small Chinese female may belie the punk rocker in me, do trust that I was more than thrilled to bang my head about with the rest of the crowd. (Ok fine. I was probably doing more bopping than banging).
Having never claimed to be the early bloomer, I witnessed my first mosh pit up close – a group of grown-men skipping around in a circle, playing bumper cars with their bodies, sweating, grinning, rockin’ out. I quickly learned mosh pit etiquette: (1) If you’re on the periphery of the pit, you are supposed to push at the moshers to keep their circle contained. (2) When someone falls down, you immediately help him up. (3) If someone loses a shoe, you continue to mosh about, but hold the shoe up in hopes that its owner will find you.
I secretly wanted to jump in too, but I would’ve been trampled within five seconds. Besides, it would’ve seemed a bit strange for me – decked out in boots, a cashmere sweater, and shirt from the prep masters at J.Crew – to be dancing about with the black-worshiping, facial piercing, weed smoking crowd. I was content to stand in the sea of 6 foot plus men, and have a great time.
in no particular order…
1) I am elated that Hillary won New Hampshire!!!!! She looks so happy. But…what was she wearing today?? As my roommate said, a carpet? Maybe a window curtain. It’s ok. Carpet, curtain or not, she won!
Also, check out this video of her being defending her likability (and being quite personable) – and Obama making a slightly snide comment that may have worked against him in NH.
2) I just sampled Trader Joe’s peppermint oreos (officially called candy-cane joe joe’s) and let me tell you, they are absolutely fantastic.
3) I have almost played The Raveonette’s Christmas Song to death. Almost. Coincidentally, my other favorite discovery is The Killer’s A Great Big Sled…both are Christmas-y although I didn’t hear of them until this past weekend. Ooooo. I just realized point number two is sort of Christmas-related as well. Maybe I just want the holidays to come back that badly.
currently playing
Eric Anders – Never Enough (from my Travis Pandora station)
Hot Chip – Crap Kraft Dinner (heard it in Zara the other day)
never claimed to be an expert in music but…
So the other day at work, I’m sitting in a meeting with three of my coworkers. One of them is talking about a music act our client would be open to hiring for a sales conference.
“You know,” she says looking straight at me, “DZ? DJ?” I have no idea what she is talking about until…”Um, you mean Jay-Z?”
Coworker cracks up. “Yes, yes, Jay-Z!” Then she says, “Yea, so him, or this other guy…who is it? Cayenne? Cayenne something?”
Kanye West.
Phew. I still have some youth left in me.
new favorite song
At least until I overplay it, which will be very soon.
Band of Horses – Funeral.
Yes yes…another Serena-Loves-Depressed-Sounding-Music song. But to my credit, a friend recently said that my glass is not half full, it’s 3/4 full. So there.
YouTube has a video here, check it.
jt – not squared
So I bought my second CD today. Ever (My first CD was The Offspring, purchased during my alternative-flannel shirt stage in middle school).
Anyway, today’s selection was Justin Timberlake. I actually like 8 out of 13 of the songs, so that makes me happy. I do know that I’ll probably listen to it straight for the next week and get sick of the entire thing. But it’s ok, I can still drool over the pictures of him in the CD booklet. Now that I typed that, I wonder…have you ever truly drooled over anything? I certainly haven’t. I only drool in my sleep, particularly when I’m sitting up. It’s pretty embarassing, but I’ve learned that a quick wipe of the sleeve destroys all evidence. Perhaps then I’m drooling over something/someone in my sleep…maybe it’s YOU! Ah, if only you could be so lucky.
the invincible list
Music (or pieces of) that I will never, ever, get sick of:
1. Aicha – Khaled. Above and beyond. The original is the best, but the remake by Outlandish is not bad either.
2. Further – Longview.
3. Politik – Coldplay. Specifically the instrumental part at minute 4, that lasts for about 25 seconds…and that’s all.
4. “The Bridge of Kahzad Dum” from the first Lord of the Rings, from minute 4:30 on - YES. I realize this sounds really weird. Before you all go off making fun of me, hear me out (gosh, I know my dedicated readers so well). There’s a piece of absolutely beautiful orchestral music, accompanied by a lovely vocal. In the movie, it’s juxtaposed against an intense scene right after Gandalf “dies,” and Frodo and company are in mourning. Ok, that still sounds weird. But I promise you, it is so pretty!
5. Mozart Piano Concerto No. 23 in A Major, Andante. Mainly because of fond memories playing it.
6. “Now We Are Free” – Gladiator soundtrack.
Ok numbers 3 and 4 are stretches, but the parts I’ve called out really are so nice that in my mind they count.
What are yours? Not your current favorite songs, but your classics. Ones that you couldn’t kill by overplaying, even if you tried.
