fascinating!

Tip on how to reduce a scar straight from the brains of my alma mater, from this month’s issue of Real Simple:

“Massage a new scar for five minutes, twice a day, ” says Julius Few, associate professor of plastic surgery at Northwestern University, in Evanston, Illinois. “Applying pressure forces the body to make scar tissue that is flatter and lighter in color.” Start the treatment two to three weeks after the injury has healed and scabbing is gone. Stop rubbing after a year; no more improvement can be made to a scar after that.”

spreading the news, one banana at a time

I was eating a Dole banana for breakfast this morning, when I noticed a sticker promoting an animated movie titled “Space Chimps.” The sticker has a monkey (unfortunately an ugly cartoon one) on it, along with the Dole/Space Chimps URL. This is the second time I’ve noticed advertising on my little bananas – a month or two ago, I saw Jamba Juice stickers. The type of advertising – paid placement – is nothing new to the advertising world, but the actual placement itself – on a banana – is kind of cute! And a smart idea.

now playing

“Taylor” by Jack Johnson and “Easy Silence” by Dixie Chicks.

Until I kill them by overlistening…which will probably happen with another five plays.

i can’t help it

Suri is so adorable! Somehow, the child of Katie Holmes and Crazy Tom has risen above the masses of ugly alien babies to be the cutest baby ever. I typically don’t pay too much attention to celebrity gossip, but if I ever see mention of her on a magazine cover, I have to take a look. She’s somehow both perfectly pudgy and beautiful at the same time. I also covet her wardrobe.

double dipping

Dear readers, I have a confession to make. I am cheating on you. This isn’t the only blog I contribute to as I occasionally (read: three times to date) write for my company’s corporate blog. I won’t link it here because I don’t want them tracing links back to my personal blog, but if you google my name and my company, you will land on more useless commentary from yours truly. I actually liked my posting from yesterday, and think you’d enjoy the referenced YouTube video too.

cabbage patch kids

This morning, my office’s managing director reminded me of Outstanding in the Field, which he had attended this past weekend. Essentially it’s an outdoor dining experience, where 160 guests gather on a local farm and dine at a long, banquet table, appropriately set up in a field. The whole idea is to bring these locavores directly to the source of their food, and to provide only the freshest, organic and sustainable meal. Diners also bring their own plates, but everything else is provided. My MD’s meal was provided by Nate Appleman of A16 and him and his wife were sitting across the table from Michael Chabon, too. How cool is that?

I had heard about it two years ago and have always wanted to check it out. Too bad this year’s Bay Area meals are all sold out (through November!!). Wine included, it also carries a $200 price tag per person – more than double its 2002 cost. One of these days.

the new switzerland

Qatar is quickly becoming the Middle East’s mediator of choice, pledging allegiances to everyone and no one at the same time.

I love this quote from an unnamed former Qatari official: “The idea is to try to keep everybody happy – or if we can’t, to keep everybody reasonably unhappy.”

Nice.

#1 Most Satisfying Place To Find A Grammatical Error: NYTimes

#2 Most Satisfying Place To Find A Grammatical Error: Restaurant menus

Actually, I take that back. #2 is in the chat conversations with my friends, because I can gloat and feel like I’m the shiznit right there and then. #3 is on restaurant menus.
