ok fine

The rings pict is from my Memorial Day wkend photos that I was downloading last night. Indeed it is cubic zirconia, is a bit too big (ring size mind you, not rock size :p) and belongs to a friend. Who randomly bought it just because she liked it.

I promise not to blog-fib again.

But we did rent a limo this past Saturday and drink our way through Sonoma! Here’s a real picture of the group:

Sunday, hit up the Picasso again (that makes a total of 3 visits to the same exhibition haha). Went to the DeYoung on Friday too.

Monday, went cherry/white peach picking! Here’s Elain frolicking through the peach trees (although really, it could probably be me too):

Ok really now…now that my own mom may believe this, I need to clarify in the same entry that it was a boring Tuesday night, I didn’t think so many people would believe me, etc etc. Look at this convo teehehe :)

Daniel: Mom is reading your Blog

Daniel: she is ready to ask u many questions…are u really engaged?

Daniel: Mom askes..who is the unlucky one..what is the color

Daniel: Mom wants to see his picture

We had to take the back-up limo to our limo because the jacuzzi inside the normal one was broken. Here’s me being pissed that we had to take the sub-par limo.

writer’s block writer’s block writer’s block

Having issues writing at work right now. Well, more so I have to write about something I don’t want to write about. So I thought finding something I care for might inspire me to continue chugging along till 5:30.

So I just read about the increasing popularity of dabbawallas in India. These are men who deliver home-cooked meals to business men. The meals are cooked by the business men’s wives, grandmothers, etc. While I’m all for people forgoing fancy restaurants in favor of a healthier, fresher lunch prepared at home, I am quite bothered by the positioning of women as subservient individuals whose primary duty is to attend to the men of the family. I don’t think I’ve read anything with such a feeling of annoyance before. Funny too because I don’t consider myself a feminist, nor am I easily irked by non-personal issues.

Here are two snippets from the article:

  • These working men leave their homes “as early as 7 a.m., long before the woman of the house has started cooking for the day…”
    • Please. What a sacrifice it must be to leave home so early.
  • ” ‘We don’t know how we could survive without this system,’ said Vrinda Chiplunkar, who prepares daily lunches of lentils, vegetables, rice, chapatis and salad for her husband…”
    • I know how you should survive. Let your husband cook for himself or go buy his own lunches.

It saddens me that the popularity of these dabbawallas only perpetuates this inferior role of women in India. One of the dabbawallas profiled mentions that he dreams of using his earnings to send his son to college. He also has a daughter. No mention of putting her through school. Indians really must erase this antediluvian repression of the women in society.

OK. Now, I might be somewhat re-prepared to write about technology. Maybe.

It’s Memorial Day Weekend and you know what that means kids…yes, yes, you too can break out those white pants until Labor Day. Speaking of color – if you consider white a color - I thought I’d take the time to tell you about my life through the colors of the rainbow.

Red – I’m currently drinking hot water in a red mug. You know me – plain hot water is my beverage of choice.

Orange – I just applied my favorite ChapStick, Ultra SPF 30. I love it because it tastes sort of like lemon. So not orange, but it has an orange wrapper.

Yellow – Played soccer for 2 hours last night so feeling pretty healthy and active. Makes me happy.

Green – My wallet hurts; I had a $14 glass of pinor noir at the Redroom Room last night. I didn’t realize I suddenly lived in NYC.

Blue – In 2 weeks, I’m flying JetBlue to DC (before going to Boston for work). I’m super excited to go berry picking, watch a DC United game and of course, visit the National Gallery of Art again.

Indigo/Violet – Limo tour of Napa tomorrow :)

things i want to do

For some reason, I feel if I publish this list, I will be more likely to follow through. Join me, join me.

1) SFMOMA. Docent tour of Picasso exhibit before it closes on 5/28 (I already did the audio guide). Also look at the permanent exhibits.

2) DeYoung/Legion. There’s a Vivienne Westwood exhibit going on at the DeYoung.

3) Any sort of fruit picking. Cherries are in season right now! (I’m going tomorrow yay and will definitely hit up Butler’s Orchard in good ol MD when I go back in June and July)

4) Seasonal vegetable cooking club, a la Alice Waters and other Bay area chefs. Calling all interested persons! Cook using the month’s seasonal vegetable.

5) Foreign films with a historical basis. I just saw The Lives of Others (Academy Award winner for best foreign film – it’s German). Phenomenal. You must watch it now.

6) Wine club. I saw this craigslist ad for one, thought it might interesting to check out.

7) La Corneta. According to the coworkers, the best, cheap Mexican in the city, and the Glen Park location is far superior.

8 ) Run. Running (ok, who am I kidding, jogging) Bay to Breakers this Sunday and then the plan is to train for the Nike Women’s half marathon in October.

9) Napa. Another visit sometime this summer would be nice.

10) Visit Austin and Miami. I am crossing one off my list though – going to Boston for work mid-June.

11) Take a class. There’s an art history one through Berkeley. Or French through City College. Ok this is the least likely, I have major issues commiting, i.e. that Mandarin class…I blame it on that weekly Chicago travel though.

12) Actually attend my book club.

How fun!

tweezerman for president

Indeed, Tweezerman just launched his bid for the 2008 Democratic presidential race.

Real name: Dal LaMagna. Former life: started Tweezerman Co. Previous political experience: once handed out tweezers inscribed with, “Tweezerman for Congress.”

I’m always amused by the long shots that run for political office. I remember an exotic dancer named Starlight (or something similar) running for some position here in San Francisco.  Definitely brings some appreciated humor to a process that may be quite dry.

marvelous miro 2

I think I’m obsessed. Reading up on him tonight, and found this Google logo celebrating his bday:

miro.gif

It is so cute!!! Although evidently Google got in trouble for mimicking Miro’s style and was asked to take the logo down by the Miro family and Artist’s Rights Society. Please.

I joined the SFMOMA yesterday (I am officially a patron of the arts…ooooo) and  realized today that it has 2 pieces by him. I only had time to see the temp exhibits so I can’t wait to return and find the paintings.

the big trip

So what can I say. I LOVE Spain. L-O-V-E. love, love, love. I didn’t realize I could be so enthralled by museums until this trip – was mesmerized by the Prado and Thyssen in Madrid, and the Miro in Barcelona. Also did the Reina and the Picasso. The temporary exhibit on portraiture during “the age of Picasso” at the Thyssen is brilliant…Claudio de Lorena’s The Embarkation of Saint Paula is stunning…Miro’s The Smile of A Tear might be my favorite painting.

But moving on. A posting would never do my trip justice, but here are a few photos:

beckham.jpg

Real Madrid vs Valencia, 2-0. The highlight of my trip in the first 12 hours. Indeed, that is Beckham about to take a free kick, which will definitely bend into the goal, giving Real Madrid its second goal.

mayor.jpg

Plaza Mayor.

alhambra.jpg

The Alhambra in Granada. We spent five hours there and could’ve stayed for a sixth. Beautiful gardens, sour oranges.

djemma.jpg

Marrakech, Morocco. This is Djemma el Fna, the main plaza with food, snake charmers, trinkets, etc. It was cool seeing another culture, but there isn’t much to “sightsee” in Marrakech…

hookah.jpg

…so instead all we did was go out, and wake up late. Nightlife is just like the swanky NY lounges. At Le Comptoir here…no, we aren’t trying to kiss, we are blowing hookah smoke into each other’s faces (at least that’s my recollection…) I just love Ed’s expression, and how it’s framed. Cracks me up.

binge.jpg

Oh wait, here’s the other classic picture. This is called…first-night-in-barcelona-didn’t-really-eat-dinner-drank-our-brains-out-and-spent-nearly-30-euros-at-mcds-at-3am-binge-eating. Vickie’s look is priceless…oh dear, what have we done?

I’m definitely missing a bunch of photos – i.e., all the Gaudi in Barcelona…these are from Vickie’s camera and I have yet to get Lillian’s. I’ll post again once I get em.

i’m back!

And goodness gracious me am I jetlagged. Last night I went to bed at 9:30pm, and I’m currently trying to force myself to stay up until at least 10:30pm. It’s very difficult, as my eyes are already feeling quite heavy. I am trying to read some poetry (Ronni, your Waste Land) which, while mentally engaging, really isn’t what you should be doing when trying to stay up.

It’s 9:43pm right now, let’s see how far I get.

A recap of the trip soon – waiting to get pictures from friends since I forgot my own camera battery!
